# Install potato-skill in Your Coding Agent

Source: https://www.potatoannotator.com/docs/getting-started/install-potato-skill

**potato-skill is an [Agent Skill](https://agentskills.io), a folder of instructions and helper scripts that any coding agent supporting the format can load. Claude Code installs potato-skill as a plugin, and every other agent gets the folder from `npx skills add davidjurgens/potato-skill` with the agent's name after `--agent`.** Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor each have a setup page of their own. [Quick Start with a Coding Agent](/docs/getting-started/quick-start-with-a-coding-agent) covers what the skill does with a study.

## Install commands by agent

| Agent | Install | Folder the agent reads | Setup page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | `/plugin marketplace add davidjurgens/potato-skill`, then `/plugin install potato-skill@potato` | Claude Code's plugin cache | [Claude Code](/docs/getting-started/potato-skill-claude-code) |
| Codex | `npx skills add davidjurgens/potato-skill --agent codex` | `.agents/skills/` | [Codex](/docs/getting-started/potato-skill-codex) |
| Cursor | `npx skills add davidjurgens/potato-skill --agent cursor` | `.agents/skills/` | [Cursor](/docs/getting-started/potato-skill-cursor) |
| GitHub Copilot in VS Code | `npx skills add davidjurgens/potato-skill --agent github-copilot` | `.agents/skills/` | [below](#github-copilot-in-vs-code) |
| Gemini CLI | `npx skills add davidjurgens/potato-skill --agent gemini-cli` | `.agents/skills/` | [below](#gemini-cli) |
| OpenCode | `npx skills add davidjurgens/potato-skill --agent opencode` | `.agents/skills/` | [below](#opencode) |

potato-skill was written for Claude Code, and the skill's `SKILL.md` names the install folders for Codex and Cursor as well. GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode load the same files. Open the first task an agent builds in your browser and label a few items yourself before inviting annotators.

## Before you install

Potato goes in the Python environment that the agent's shell uses. The skill's helper scripts import Potato's registries and call the `potato` command, and the skill's first step checks that Potato imports. The browser extra and Chromium let `potato preview --screenshot` and the skill's walk-through script open the task in a headless browser:

```bash
pip install 'potato-annotation[preview]'
playwright install chromium
```

The [`skills` CLI](https://github.com/vercel-labs/skills) runs through `npx`. Version 1.7.6 of the CLI requires Node.js 22.20 or later.

## What the skills CLI writes

`npx skills add` copies `SKILL.md`, the 30 reference files, and the nine helper scripts into `.agents/skills/potato-skill/`, and records the source in `skills-lock.json` at the project root. Add `-g` to install into `~/.agents/skills/potato-skill/` for every project on the machine. Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot in VS Code, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode all read `.agents/skills/`. One command can name several of those agents, and the agents then share a single copy:

```bash
npx skills add davidjurgens/potato-skill --agent codex cursor github-copilot gemini-cli opencode
```

The CLI's [agent table](https://github.com/vercel-labs/skills/blob/main/docs/agents.md) gives the `--agent` name and folder for the other agents the CLI supports. Every agent on this page also loads the skill without a command when a request fits the skill's description, such as a request to build an annotation task.

## GitHub Copilot in VS Code

[VS Code](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/copilot/customization/agent-skills) reads `.agents/skills/` and `.claude/skills/` in local sessions, beside Copilot's own `.github/skills/`. Skills work in both chat and agent mode. Typing `/potato-skill` in chat starts the skill.

## Gemini CLI

[Gemini CLI](https://geminicli.com/docs/cli/skills/) reads `.agents/skills/` in the workspace and `~/.agents/skills/` for the user. `/skills list` shows the skills Gemini found. Gemini starts a matching skill without a command, and asks you to confirm before loading the skill into the conversation.

## OpenCode

[OpenCode](https://opencode.ai/docs/skills/) reads `.agents/skills/` in every folder from the current one up to the git worktree, and `~/.agents/skills/` for a global install. The agent loads a matching skill through OpenCode's `skill` tool.

## Without the skills CLI

The potato-skill repository has an `AGENTS.md` at the repository root, a short summary of the skill's rules that Codex and Cursor read by filename. Copying the file into your project root gives an agent the rules with no install step. The file points at reference files and scripts that only a full install puts on disk. The [Quick Start with a Coding Agent](/docs/getting-started/quick-start-with-a-coding-agent) compares the full install with the `AGENTS.md` copy. The reference files are also published at [davidjurgens.github.io/potato-skill](https://davidjurgens.github.io/potato-skill/). An agent that can read web pages can use the published copy, and you can read the files there before installing.

## Updating and removing the skill

The `skills` CLI updates and removes the skill by name. Add `-g` to either command for a global install:

```bash
npx skills update potato-skill
npx skills remove potato-skill
```

`update` checks the installed copy against the GitHub repository and replaces the copy when the repository has changed. `remove` deletes `.agents/skills/potato-skill/` and the skill's entry in `skills-lock.json`. The [Claude Code page](/docs/getting-started/potato-skill-claude-code) gives the update and removal commands for the plugin.
